I’m baking cake today (the yeast is all gone). I am tackling the somewhat extravagant Poppy Seed Torte from the Guardian’s 10 best Seed Recipes.
The thing is, I am not feeling too god and am really not on top of things today, and have ended up making the cake all wrong.
It was the eggs – loads of eggs (6) added to loads of butter (200g) and very little sugar (60g icing sugar). It just wasn’t mixing together properly.
After I had added (working down the list of ingredients)
Juice and grated zest of 1 lemon
4 tsp rum
½ tsp vanilla extract
280g poppy seeds, crushed
120g hazelnuts, ground
I came to
125g caster sugar
?
Then I spotted the fact that I should have used only the yolks up front and now needed to whip the whites and the sugar.
(Head>Keyboard proximity moment)
Why? Why, why oh why did I not read the recipe through first?
Because my back bloody hurts, that’s why.
Is it not true that if you are going to balls up a recipe, it is always going to be an expensive one? Not just a Victoria Sandwich.
I shall probably incinerate the fillet steak too. It’s turning into that kind of a day.
If that’s the same torte that you gave me for the spinners this morning, it was very much appreciated – and the rump of it was going home for the Doctor! 🙂
That’s the one. I guess Julia liked it then
