#augustbreak2025 #day1

Hello, my name is Beth, and I hate selfies.

I am a Yorkshire lass, some would say “a Yorkshire rose,” and today is Yorkshire Day. Our chosen symbol for Yorkshire Day is the White Rose.

I hate selfies, will this do?

This is an old, old photograph of myself, wearing a tee shirt of an even more venerable vintage – from my Usenet days, when I posted to uk.local.yorkshire (aka ULY). That Usenet group is where I met many (most!) of my friends, and also my husband. Those were the days…

I actually wrote a whole other post for today, a far longer one. I wobbled when I realised that it was personal, revealing, and a prime example of over-sharing. The post was about how I was christened Elizabeth, but choose to be known as Beth, and some of the reasons why I chose that version of my name. It was quite cathartic…

(If you are intrigued, and care to read it, you may ask me for access to it. If I know and trust you, I will give you the password without question. If we do not know each other, we may need to discuss the matter first.)

The Scattered Thinker is somewhat past her prime, but not yet in any danger of giving up. In the Inter-world, she is often known as plumbum, or sometimes as ulygan. In the Real Life, she goes by the name of Beth. Beth is a roamer. She lives in a motorhome and has a backup static caravan that serves as a bolthole if needed. Bricks and mortar are very much a thing of the past. Contact Beth if you would like to correspond with paper and pen.

  1. What a lovely (though short ?) walk down Memory Lane, Beth – that tee shirt holds placeholders to many life changing events for so many of us. Glad I was there to ‘bump into’ you and Steve – and here we all still are!
