365:137It’s not much of a photograph, I know – but the image and my posting of it are appropriate for today – World Telecommunication and Information Society Day

The theme for this year’s World Telecommunication and Information Society Day is Broadband for Sustainable Development

This is an issue that is so important for a community such as ours that I could scarcely take any other topic for my 365 today. I went out of the back door and pointed my camera and it’s amazing 42x zoom lens at the island’s telephone exchange building. This little brick hut routes our telephones and broadband, and lies up the hill about half a mile behind our house. We are lucky and my husband, who works from home for a multi national IT company is fortunate to be able to work from this island base instead of at his office in Manchester. At the North end of the island it is a different story and a more expensive and less reliable broadband solution is in place for them. Some of those users are reliant on the Internet for their incomes too.

Me, I just rely on it for social exchange and mental stimulation. Actually, that’s not true. The Internet sustains a standard of living that would not be possible on an island without it. I’d be lost without the Internet, without Amazon, without eBay, without Ravelry, without Blipfoto…
