A good night in

I am a most deliriously happy woman this morning. Yes, the Mingus socks are completed (and currently soaking) but far more importantly than that… my usual Monday morning trawl of the BBC’s iPlayer turned up the most wonderful treat for me — and I don’t mean Once, as fine a treat as that is. I mean…

Becket.

Just pause to drink that in: Richard Burton, Peter O’Toole, John Gielgud, Sian Phillips.

In Becket.

We were taken to see the film from school when I was around 12 years old. I fell head over heels for both Burton and O’Toole and could not have chosen between them if they had both stood before me to plight their troth…

The film was fantastic and I was enthralled from start to finish. Many times over the years I have wished that I might see the film again but it never seemed to turn up on the TV schedules, perhaps because it runs for 2 hrs 23 minutes.

One thing perplexes me however. My memory of that film is that it was in glorious technicolour, I remember being struck by the colour of Burton’s eyes, and yet the film appears to be in B&W. Odd, the way that memory and recall work.

Anyway, that’s me and my knitting sorted out for one evening this week. Once will take care of the best part of another, and I have Being Human to catch up with too. We should see good knitting progress this week.

Having finished the Mingus socks, I swatched yarns for my first Silk Road Socks KAL last night. That went badly. Nothing would give me the right stitch count. I gave up and got Antalya out.

Remember Antalya? When I put it away I had completed one repeat. Now when I looked at it again, I could not figure out just how I had figured out the Japanese Short Row technique previously. The thread markers had me defeated. I  can find lots of instructions on the ‘Net for JSRs using safety pins, but not for this technique. I think it differs not just in the thread markers, but possibly also in the way that the gaps are closed. I cannot be sure, though. If you have a link that will help, please leave it for me in the comments.

I won’t talk about the sock swatching… I’ll keep that for WIP Wednesday.

The KAL begins tomorrow. I am not sure if my sock will get off the starting line then, as a trip to town is scheduled and beginning a complex cabled sock in a dark yarn on the ferry might not be the brightest move. I find it difficult to wait, though – the yarn that I plan to use is just sensational.

It was in technicolor. Maybe the Iplayer is doing reverse colorization!

Indeed it was/is – I am not going mad after all. After reading your comment I went and played it to see. Although the still is in B&W, as is the image on the DVD shown at IMDB, the credits do play in technicolour. So I shall get to see those eyes. *sigh*

      Thanks
