There is literally very little space in my life for treasured items and it is some time now since I down-sized and decluttered, learning just to “let stuff go.” The big treasure in my life is my husband and, as long as I have him by my side, what need do I have of material things?

Mr L is not keen on having his photo taken, and this forced me to wonder about treasures in my life. What do I value, and what excites me?

For this prompt I have a slightly different take on Treasures, as something that we find along our way – little discoveries of some things that bring us joy.

Cheese, in fact.

You heard it here first: Cheese! Or, rather Cheeses, plural.

We just passed a milestone this week, it has been eight years since we left Orkney (August 2017), to explore Europe in our van. We were in France by September that year, falling sufficiently in love with the country to choose to take up residence by the following April (2018).

France is one of the natural homes of Cheese. There are hundreds to sample. We have established some favoured cheeses but still enjoy trying new ones. I have to confess that when we stumble upon a new-to-us cheese, previously unheard of, never sampled, and probably from a single source – then we regard that as Treasure Trove.

At dinner last week we were able to order a cheese plate and chose to mix new cheeses with old favourites.

Clockwise from 12 – Marainox, Machecoulais, (homemade fig conserve), Epoisses, Peppered Brie

The runny cheese was wonderful, and I had to ask. It is called Machecoulais, and comes from a single dairy, in Machecoul. This piqued my interest, having just come from Machecoul a day or two past. We had found Crème Crue in the supermarket there, so I wondered if they might also stock this cheese…

When we left Préfailles, we hightailed it back to the supermarket in Machecoulais – and found our cheese. We also found another new cheese, which comes from the same dairy. Of course we bought that too, and came home with two cheesy treasures!

Since then we have tracked down the dairy and found that it has a shop. It’s only a short hop from Base Camp, certainly under 20 minutes drive. We are going off in the van on Tuesday in order to scout the possibilities and hopefully return with further treasure.
