Of trees and cake and birthday things

Today is my boy’s birthday. When he was a lad yesterday would have been that day that we went to fetch the tree. After trimming the tree, we would have a birthday Carpet Picnic  by its light. He liked boy-type food,  unlike his sister – she would choose Baked Alaska instead of birthday cake, but he went for pork pies and sausage rolls and chocolate cake. All the traditional stuff. His favourite treat though was mince pies. He could eat a dozen of those, and did so once, apparently. I was not there to stop him. He still managed to appear charming, rather than greedy, or so I was told.
