6KCBWDAY1 If I were a yarn

It is that time of year once more – Knit Crochet Blog Week

[su_box title=”Day One (Monday 11th May): If You Were Yarn” style=”soft” box_color=”#5a889e” radius=”5″] If you were a type or brand of yarn, which would you be? Are you a classic pure wool? Is there extra tension but a bit of bounce in you because of your high twist? Would you be more like a high-maintenance, strictly hand-wash fluffy angora or a ‘bring it on’ acrylic, bravely heading into the world of possible baby-sick laundering disasters knowing that you will always come out bright and unharmed?

Spend some time browsing yarns and getting to know their qualities, and decide which yarn you think best matches your personality.[/su_box]

If I were a yarn, what would I be. Nothing commonplace, that is for sure.  That said, I am most certainly a utility model. A good, honest, hard-working wool perhaps but I do like to think that I am  distinctive; more than a touch out of the ordinary.  My yarn type might well be something unique, for they surely threw away the mould when I was made.

Homespun
Homespun

As a one-off, clearly I would be a homespun yarn; thick and cushy and I would be made entirely of natural fibres.

Simply natural

My tastes are simple, though possibly refined in many ways.  Not one for outward show, I rarely  dress up and never wear make-up – why gild the lily?  Undyed, then but not without some natural colour and shading. Au naturel. Well, I was brought up as a Naturist!

No llama in me, that's for sure
No llama in me, that’s for sure

I fancy that I would be fashioned from a blend or a mixture for there is much in my character that is contradictory. Nothing too exotic however, I am a very down to earth sort and pretty much a homebody – so nothing involving Yak or Llama or Camel or Quiviut. The fact is that although I enjoy a little luxury from time to time, I could never be considered myself to  be luxurious.

Tough as old boots
Tough as old boots

Am I a tough nut or a bit of an old softie? Well, life has provided its fair share of knocks and I have shown sufficient resilience to become a survivor. There’s plenty in me that is soft but a certain carapace has developed – I am tough as old boots, as they say. Having kicked around a bit, raised a  family, been married more items than I am going to admit to here,  had some interesting career choices and more than a few turns of luck, ill and good – I like to think  that overall I am quite interesting.  My yarn type  might  be thick-and-thin;  slubby and textured with nepps and noils…

Here is my skein:

  • Handspun, slubby, thick-and-thin
  • Characterful
  • Shaded
  • Spun from a mixture rather than a smooth blend
    1. wool for resilience and warmth
    2. raw silk for character and texture and extra strength
    3. alpaca to reflect my softer side
  • Undyed or a subtle natural dye

- and this is only one of three colours

Great post, you’ve thought about this a lot 🙂 I love your yarn, I should be spinning stuff like that but always go for something a bit more flashy, but much less useful!

I do the flashy stuff too – I might not be soft or fine or slick myself but my yarns very often are – and colourful. Thank you for visiting, Hannah

Ooh, another handspun yarn. I think the commercial and indie yarns may be feeling a little left out at the moment! I totally understand where you’re coming from though, what commercial yarn can possibly cover the complexities of any crafter? Handspun comes from our centre and reflects how we’re feeling as we create it as well as our choices in fibre.

True indeed. Thank you for stopping by. I’ll return calls as soon as I can but today is a little frenetic.

A lovely idea – in some ways I think we could all say we are like handspun yarn – unique! I didn’t really think of that but you make a great comparison.
