Honesty being the best policy…

A couple of weeks ago I signed up to the Orkney Camera Club – they have a reduced price membership available to “Distant Members” for we outlanders. Although we cannot get to the monthly meetings we are able to submit images for the competitions and so on. I am not very competitive at the best of times but by submitting images for judging I can gain feedback that will help me to learn and progress with my camera. It goes part way to making up for having no peer group to learn from. That’s my theory, at least.

Well, the time for the first submission has arrived and of course I am not ready! With everything that has been going on I have not been able to find time to work at the topic: Pattern/Texture, though I did keep the brief at the front of my mind while we were away and I do believe that one or two from Inverewe may make the cut at this end.

Today I was to be found at the bottle bank, scrutinising rust. I also made a small window in my day and I cleared off the table in the front room to work at some shots while I was cooking lunch. I had some great ideas, none of which came off! I appear to have lost all ability to make pictures so am now trawling through some recent files to see what will “do”.

I can only submit three images in colour and three in mono, six in total. As I have no standout shots, I find myself wading through a mass of the mundane. It is so tempting to think “these cannot win” and not to enter, losing sight of the idea that winning is not the point, it’s the feedback that I want and so badly need.

Really, I cannot help but think that my camera is wasted on me.

This one that I took yesterday may go in. I know it is neither a pattern nor a texture but I like the patterns that the seeds make in the pod “windows”. What would you think – fits the brief, or no?

I’d say it fits. There are the patterns of the seeds in their pods.
