Great Excitement

There has been a gaping hole in my life since I ran away to Scotland and that hole is Open University-shaped. I miss learning, which is now priced beyond my reach, and I miss teaching, which is impractical when one lives on a remote island. I think it is learning that I miss the most however. Well, Summer School maybe the most of all… *sigh*

Today I received an email from the OU Alumni people and it held information about Future Learn. I wasted no time at all in investigating this exciting free on-line learning opportunity. Within minutes I was signed up for several “MOOC” courses.

We offer a diverse selection of free, high quality online courses from some of the world’s leading universities and other outstanding cultural institutions. Our aim is to connect learners from all over the globe with high quality educators, and with each other. We believe learning should be an enjoyable, social experience, with plenty of opportunities to discuss what you’ve studied, in order to make fresh discoveries and form new ideas. Courses are delivered one step at a time, and are accessible on mobile, tablet and desktop, so you can fit learning around your life, rather than your life around learning.

When I say “several”, I mean eight. Varying from 2 hrs a week of study to 5 hours, and from 6 to 10 weeks in length. I am going to be busy! Luckily the start dates are staggered.

My first course begins on the 14th October and offers 30 hours looking into the power of Branding. I shall also be programming a game for Android (go on, admit you are not surprised), starting 28th October. Other subjects are as diverse as England in the time of Richard III and Forensic Science (complete with a murder mystery to solve), with a look at psychology and ecology in between.

Future Learn is owned by the OU and run in partnership with a wide range of Universities and institutions of note. I have a long history of being at the learning forefront with the OU (Oh, CoSy, how I miss thee!) and was not going to miss this opportunity for anything.

Why not have  a look and see if anything interests you? There truly is something  for everyone, even though this is a pilot. Learning is fun.

How does it work? How It Works

Hope to see some of you online, soon 🙂
