A Life Without Chocolate

Daily Prompt: Five a Day

You’ve being exiled to a private island, and your captors will only supply you with five foods. What do you pick?

I am going to assume that my captors merely wish to isolate me and not to kill  me, so the island has an ample fresh water supply. There will be edible plants growing naturally, some will be fruiting. I think that we can assume that my Vitamin C is taken care of. It is an island, so I can catch fish for protein and  essential oils etc. I can evaporate sea water for salt.

That being so, I would ask for:

  1. Chicken(s) – live, on the hoof.  They will provide meat protein when I choose to neck them and in the meantime I’ll have enjoyable and entertaining company plus the benefit of fresh eggs.
  2. A pair of goats – for roast kid, milk, cheese, and further company
  3. Potatoes – some to eat now and I can plant the ones that sprout , for an ongoing supply
  4. Flour – it is unrealistic to think I could ask for wholegrain wheat, plant some, tend it, harvest it and grind it between two stones…
  5. A large supply of olive oil

So, I have fish and two meat proteins, milk, cheese and eggs. I have flour to bake bread (flatbreads or sourdough) and to make pasta. I can forage for wild carrots, wild garlic, whatever grows in whichever climate that I find myself in. I hope it is tropical – plenty of  water and lots of wild fruits. Herbal tisanes will have to take the place of tea and coffee, which will soon work their way out of my system and the cravings will go.

But Chocolate?

A Month in France: Nothing is Lost

I am lagging on the Month in the Country prompts, and lagging badly at that. I have a list of prompts t be caught up on and I shall be working my way through them here, or at Scattered Thoughts depending on where the post most naturally sits. I have elected to tackle the prompts not in date order necessarily but to seize upon prompts that offer me space in which to write down the things that I am feeling the need to say. Even if I need to crowbar it in. The thing is, I am going to continue to be short of time and space in which to write and so a two-for-one is useful and I hope to do as many of those as I can. Seems like a plan? … Continue readingA Month in France: Nothing is Lost
