The ferry blanket is now a live Ravelry project – I expect it will do much hibernating over the coming months. I am just two squares into this project so far.
One of the great things about knitting is that it leaves room for thought. Sometimes simple knitting is a good thing to do in the background while the brain is actively engaged in thought in the foreground. It was in this spirit that I began my first squares this morning.
Thoughts so far:
- 31 stitch squares are very small indeed – I’m considering changing to 35 for my smallest size.
- I already know that one day I would like to make a planned version of this, purchasing harmonious shades and resulting in a work of art
- This version will be strictly a “Joseph’s Coat”
- Thank heaven I found a use for that Regia I frogged last week – it is perfect in this project
- I have another design stewing in my head
- I would like to make a story quilt to go alongside the ferry blankie
Sooooo…. if anybody is kind enough to donate scraps, or even whole balls, of sock yarn to this project – please consider telling me a little about the yarn and the project it is left over from. Maybe where the yarn came from and what prompted you to choose that colour? I would be delighted to document the squares and weave a little history into the blankie.
Hi Beth, are you still wanting some sock yarn. I am just catchng up with your blog and I noticed you are doing the sock yarn blanket. I certainly have some partial balls from projects that you are welcome to (I am sure my mum has some too). Would you like me to send them to you? I have been concentrating on a couple of scarves the last few weeks ( for my neighbours as a leaving gift), but am hoping to get started on the shawl pattern you gave me once we are settled in Orkney. Yours is looking good. I couldn’t restrict mine to one kind of sock yarn as I’d never have enough yarn to finish. Mine is going on the wall so I am happy to mix fibres, and weights to some extent. I’m going to stick to weights of approx 400m to 100g – say, 380m to 430m.
I’d love to have some Bonny, if you can spare it. I’d swap you some back if I could find any. There’s small piece of PYO left from my Merope socks but the other of my Bonny skeins (Rockpool) is only part knit and I don’t know how much will be spare – and I just gave Jam away to SpinningGill. I can send you bits as I get my socks finished over the coming months?
Is Toddy any use to you? Or Beautiful? – anyway, anything you spot that you like, do ask. I’ll be getting photos up as I go.
Sorry, forgot to say that I don’t know how many yards I need for a square. They are 31 stitches on 2.5mm. My scales supposedly weigh to 2 gms. They tell me two of my loose squares are 4g whereas the third doesn’t register. Together all 3 weigh 6g. The six that are made up weigh 8 gms together. All weights include the provisional yarn. So – between 1 and 2 gms will make a square. At 420m per 100g (Bonny weight) that’s er… probably in the 5 to 8 metre ballpark – but shorter lengths can be joined to make a bicolour square. Waste not, want not!
Hi, I have collected together all the spare sock wool (with some from mum). Where would you like me to send it? I had better do it soon before all the craft stuff gets packed away. We have found a house in Orkney but we are waiting on the results of a survey before we can be sure it is definitely going to happen (fingers crossed). We are officially moving to Orkney on next Thursday’s ferry so quite exciting. Steph
